The Problem

People with serious mental illnesses are often the last to get help, and often don't even seek help because of discrimination, lack of support and proper care not being available. This leads to homelessness and other social problems.

Plan of Action

Based on the work I did as a member of the Second Step Players, a theatre troupe based in Connecticut which uses theatre to raise awareness of mental health issues. To serve the needs of survivors of brain disorders through theraputic and empowering creative expression, and to raise awareness in the community through the Art of Understanding. Creative Sanity will consist primarily of survivors of brain disorders working to dispel the myths and misconceptions of mental illnesses through community educational workshops, as well as live theatre and musical performances with themes related to mental health. Through this involvement the survivors will become empowered as they relate their experiences to the community. As those suffering and recovering from mental illness gain acceptence in the community, they will not only gain a sense of self-esteem, but will be better able to contribute meaningfully to the community by rising to a higher level of acceptence and funcionality, and through this enhanced understanding, be better able to procure employment in the competitive job market.
