The Problem

GlobeMed is a network of university students that partners with grassroots organizations around the world to help promote global health equity and improve the health of the impoverished. The GlobeMed chapter at the University of Colorado at Boulder is partnered with Himalayan Healthcare (HHC), a non-profit organization in Nepal. Nepal is a remote developing country and many of its citizens live in highly isolated areas. This makes providing any healthcare, let alone great healthcare, difficult in under-served areas. This is heartbreaking knowing that there are high rates of preventable disease and malnutrition throughout rural Nepal. Our partnership with HHC is working to improve the health, living standards, and education of the people of Nepal, particularly in under-served areas. One area we are particularly focusing on right now is improving water sanitation through better waste disposal in Nepal. Water borne diseases from poor sanitation are widespread in rural Nepal and only 27% of people in rural Nepal have access to improved sanitation facilities. Every year in Nepal 3000 people die from preventable diarrheal diseases with 20% (1,100) of children under five died from preventable diarrheal diseases, mainly caused by poor sanitation. We are working with HHC's Latrine Program, which aims to provide more sanitary pit latrines to rural villages in Nepal, which in turn will decrease many preventable diseases.

Plan of Action

Each GlobeMed chapter partners with a grassroots organization in a developing country to collaborate on specific projects, organize educational programs, organize a global health curriculum on campus, and lead trips to work with partners in communities abroad. Through our partnership with Himalayan Healthcare (HHC) we support programs that help provide income generation, community education, and most importantly primary healthcare for the people of Nepal, particularly the under-served rural population. Our GlobeMed chapter helps raise money and awareness for Himalayan Healthcare through events, fundraisers, and seminars on global health in and around the University of Colorado campus. All of these aspects of our organization give us a very broad range of action in helping to end health inequity in Nepal and around the world. The more money we are able to fundraise or accumulate in the form of grants, the more of an impact we can make on the lives of so many Nepalese villagers.
