The Problem

I am trying to help solve homelessness in Greensboro by supporting Greensboro Urban Ministry, an organization that assists the homeless in our community. I learned that the Guilford County School System has identified over 1000 children as homeless. When I heard this fact and other depressing statistics about homelessness in my community I wanted to do something to help.

Plan of Action

I have been very involved in taking ballroom dance lessons at Fred Astaire Dance Studio. My instructors are all from the Ukraine and are amazingly talented. Because of the increased popularity of shows like "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance"I felt that a local show that featured the instructors performing professional showcase dances would be well recieved. My mother and I went to the studio and pitched the idea asking them if they would donate their time and talent, we would take care of everything else. My mother and I got to work organizing the event. While my mom was making phone calls I got to work designing the flyers, tickets, programs, creating the blogspots, posting on numerous event calendars and contacting various media outlets to try to get the word out about the event. Because of the success of the first "Dance for Hope" we held it again February 6th,2010 and once again met with sucess. It was held at the Koury Convention Center, which we were able to use at a reduced price. Printing and dance dresses were donated. People paid $25 for tickets and all proceeds went directly to Greensboro Urban Ministry. I also wanted raise awareness of the problem of homelessness and inform the public of services Greensboro Urban Ministry provides. Therefore, I contacted several NC newspapers and asked them for images of homelessness that I could use in a slideshow presentation to be played at the show. I received many images and was able to create a slideshow that I truly feel emphasized the plight of the homeless and inspired people to volunteer.
