The Problem
The significant effect the majority of the survivors of domestic violence, and sexual assault undergo is the loss of their voices, and their rights. Most of these women and sometimes men feel powerless, alienated, and silenced because of their abuse. My goal is to un-silence the silence, and let these women know that they are capable anything outside of the perpetrators home. I hope to allow these women and men to speak, and move freely through their voice and body movements. I want to infuse confidence, and art back into these individuals lives through my program. The main objective is to bring artistic activity into a clinical setting. The class would consist of, a simple warm-up, some type of creative movement component, and a wellness activity, which would include some type of breathing, stretching, or visualization activity. At the end of every session, individuals would receive “take care cards,” which would offer tools for stress reduction. These would be distributed often because many who are at the shelter are only there temporarily; it’s essential they have information to take with them. The goal we have for them is to be creative, creativity helps with the healing process.
