The Problem

My brother, Daniel Trush, started Daniel's Music Foundation (DMF) in 2006 to offer music classes free of charge to members of New York City's disabled community. I help with all aspects of DMF,including serving on the Board of directors. DMF started with one class and five members and now offers 26 classes to over 150 members (including children and adults)! We also offer active outreach and off-site programs, which bring musical performances and workshops to disabled individuals who are unable to attend our classes on site. Our classes help members build self-esteem and confidence through making music together in a collaborative community environment. Music helps our members overcome many physical, social and emotional challenges.

Plan of Action

Daniel's Music Foundation offers classes free of charge to youth and adults with disabilities living in New York City. We currently offer classes twice a week (on Monday and Wednesday nights). Classes are taught by certified music therapists, as well as musicians who are passionate about helping people with disabilities. Classes run February through May, in July and from September through December, culminating in Music Celebration concerts performed in front of audiences of 400 people. We also offer outreach programs, sharing music with people who are unable to attend classes in person. Through this program, our members perform at rehabilitation centers, hospitals, schools and nursing homes. As members gain experience, we hope that they will also teach and assist in classes, earning an income from the skills they have developed.
