Darfur Schools of Peace

the problem:
Since 2003, Darfur has been the target of systematic and widespread destruction. At least 2.5 million people are currently displaced within the region in isolated camps. Their homes, agricultural resources, livestock, water systems and household belongings have been stolen or destroyed. Community assets such as school buildings have also been destroyed. The Darfur Peace and Development Organization's (DPDO) two assessment missions in the region provided clear evidence of pressing needs that the organization could meet effectively. The assessment team found that Darfuri teachers were volunteering their time to gather and teach children in the community using any resources available. Students received their lessons sitting under trees or in the sun, writing in the sand instead of notebooks. Some schools requested that families in the community pay a small fee to help compensate teachers. However, this cost was too much for many of the displaced people of the community.

The loss of educational opportunity is a great sorrow to families and communities that revere knowledge. Thousands of school-aged children languished beyond the reach of relief efforts. DPDO initiated the Darfur Schools Program to help fill this gap.
A key tenet of DPDO’s mission is to enable Darfuris to effectively rebuild and develop their homeland. DPDO believes that youth education is a fundamental component of future progress in the region. Missed education produces debilitating consequences for individuals, especially in terms of employment, and can ignite a new cycle of violence and revenge. In a phone conversation, DPDO President Suliman Giddo heard the story of a School of Peace student. The boy explained that if it were not for the opportunity to attend his school, he would have joined the rebel forces. Investing in education provides vital leverage for peace and progress in Darfur.
the plan of action:
Currently DPDO sponsors 14 Schools of Peace in North Darfur and 4 in Chad, educating more than 10,600 children free-of-charge.
Many displaced rural students have no educational opportunities beyond 8th grade. To meet this pressing need, DPDO also is constructing a high school in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
