Washington, DC, 20036See map: Google MapsWhat's the problem you are trying to solve?: The persistent conflict in Darfur has destroyed the environment surrounding camps for Internally
Displaced Persons (IDPs). Shortages of fuel wood have had severe negative impact on the safety
and survival of Darfuri women, the primary collectors of firewood.
Wood collection exposes women and girls to attacks and sexual abuse; each month they must
travel increasingly long distances to find wood; in addition to safety risks, this work reduces the
time and energy available for their household and child rearing activities.
With over two million displaced people -- mainly women and children -- the cycle of degradation
and shortages will continue in Darfur unless effective alternatives are implemented.
A solar cooker program in Iridimi camps for Darfuri refugees in Chad has met with considerable
success. All of the 4669 families in the Iridimi camp are successfully using solar cookers (ca.
17,000 individuals). Now replacement cookers will be provided for the families every six months
produced by a small local production house in the camp. When a woman uses her cooker twice a
day she saves 66% of the needed firewood for cooking. Very few women leave the camp now to
collect firewood and that has become a measure of how successful the program can become
elsewhere. Why is it important to you?: The solar cooker is an important tool that can help limit -- and reverse -- the negative
consequences of fuel wood collection for Darfuri women. The Darfur Peace and Development Organization's (DPDO) Solar Cooker Program is
designed to bring this tool into widespread, everyday use throughout Sudan -- and particularly
among the displaced civilians in Darfur. What's your plan of action?: DPDO has worked since 2006 to introduce and
implement a program of solar cooker use in Darfur IDP camps and Darfuri settlements around
Khartoum. The pilot initiative successfully acclimated users in three locations.
In the past two years, the training program has been expanded to five locations. Many women have
enthusiastically adopted this technology, reporting that is saves a great deal of money and/or time spent procuring fire fuels and has allowed them additional time for other household duties.
The trainees learn to construct and use a model of solar cooker called “CookIt”, developed by Solar
Cookers international. DPDO provides supplies and training expertise,
manuals and follow-up assessments of use.
DPDO is planning to develop a micro-enterprise initiative that enables women to operate small
business that make and sell the cookers in their locality. Additionally DPDO is working to engage
other NGOs and Ahfad University in Khartoum in a consortium that shares information and
resources for solar cooker use in Sudan, with a particular emphasis on Darfur. How Can Others Help?: DPDO is always in need of donations/funding in order to continue the operation of our Solar Cooker program and assist the thousands of Darfuris who rely on our critical services.
Keep up the good work! Have you thought about applying for a Do Something Grant? If not, you totally should. Here's the link: http://www.dosomething.org/grants. Good luck!
Hello!
Thank you so much for this link! Do you know if DPDO, a non-profit organization, would be able to apply for and receive a grant, or are they only for individuals?
Also, check out our new project, and tell your friends!
