The Problem
We want to alert people to the facts about dating violence and abuse and how to do something about it. Many teens get caught up in situations like this and shut the world out, not knowing what to do about the abuse. We want them to know their options, and how to find a way out, even if it is not happening to them at the current moment, because it could happen to them or one of their friends later in life. Also, we want to inform people that Dating Abuse is not always just physical, but mental as well, and be able to recognize that mental abuse can have tremendous effects on a person. Hopefully, also, make people think twice before abusing their partner.
Plan of Action
The plan is to impliment a Just Walk Away Day at my high school through our Student Leadership Program.
1. Hold a button design contest leading up to J.W.A.D to find a design that is relateable to my student body.
2. Using the school button maker, print the buttons, with different facts about dating violence and prevention.
3. Throughout the day make announcements about Dating Violence, giving statistics, facts, and helpful information.
4. Make T-shirts that say "1 in 3" on the front and "teens are abused in a relationship" on the back and have the student leadership team wear them that day.
5. Hang up posters throughout the school with facts and warning signs on them.
6. In classes hand out flowers to 1/3 of the school to represent the 1:3 statistic. Sort of a bitter sweet realization.
7. Have the "Don't You Love Me?" perform at the school. A 20 min skit performed by students at Wichita South High School, to show the warning signs, different kinds, effects, and ways to get out of abusive relationship.
