Day of Disability Awareness
the problem:
The project was started two years ago, in an attempt to raise awareness on the challenges faced by handicapped individuals. Equipment is gathered and students are assigned disabilities with which to experience. Students are asked to go to their classes and the multitude of buildings on campus as they normally would. At the end of the day the students are asked to fill out a survey rating the accessibility and difficulty of living out the day. This data is then presented to the University and is considered when they build new buildings, or repair existing ones. The program has recently expanded to include a variety of speakers that share their life stories with the students. At the very end of the day the students have a round table discussion of their experiences.
