I was trying to promote awareness and combat violence, harassment, bulling, and name-calling against LGBTQQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer and Intersex) and their allies.
Plan of Action
I decided that the best way to address this would be to have a Day of Silence, in which students participating choose to remain silent all day to mirror the silence LGBTQQI are forced into everyday. At the end of the day we held a Breaking the Silence rally, where I recited some MLK quotes and spoke to over 300 student about why we did this and then collectively (the whole group) read stories to the students about other students our age and men and women who had died because of their sexual orientation and the intolerance of others. Now, in the days afterwards, there have been student approaching me, some giving me affirmations and some opening up to me about their situations or things that have happened to them.
