The Problem

The Day of Silence, on April 20, 2012, is a national event encouraging respect for others and standing up against bullying and harassment in schools in the United States. It was fueled partly by the well-known story of Matthew Shepard, who was bullied to death for his homosexuality; however, the voluntary day of silence also echoes the forced silence that LGBT persons face everyday to protect themselves from discrimination and bullying.

Plan of Action

We want to observe this Day of Silence and break the silence together as a celebration on April 20, 2012, as we have done in the past. We are planning to bring an LGBT activist/artist/poet to campus to celebrate our success and break the silence together. We have requested that Andrea Gibson, Everyone Is Gay.com and Dani Shay come, and we hope that at least one of these people can make it. This will create a sense of community after a hard day of silence and remembering/calling attention to the discrimination many of us face for being LGBT.
