The Problem

Delivering Hope, Inc. recognizes that while maternal mortality and morbidity can be reduced through medical intervention, inadequate resources continue to threaten the lives of many women in developing countries. This organization is dedicated to decreasing the number of deaths and complications suffered by women in impoverished nations as a consequence of pregnancy, by collecting medical supplies from hospitals in the United States and delivering them to the maternity wards of hospitals around the world.

Plan of Action

After volunteering in local Bay Area hospitals, I realized the tremendous medical waste our health care system creates. Even more troubling was that many of the supplies that were being thrown out were clean and usable (though not necessarily sterile, they had not been used on patients). We found volunteers at local hospitals to gather the medical supplies until we could pick them up. We then store the supplies until we have enough for a shipment to a partner maternity ward abroad. So far we have shipped two shipments (of over 150 boxes) to Papua New Guinea, and are looking to ship to Mali next.
