The Problem

The second leading cause of death in college-aged people is Suicide. This frightening statistic is what inspired the Nuçi's Space Student Organization to host a Depression and Suicide Awareness Week. It will be held in the Spring on the University of Georgia campus in Athens Georgia. The mission of this campaign is to get students talking about depression and suicide with the hope uniting everyone in fighting the stigma of mental illness. We will attempt to achieve this goal by devising a fresh, stimulating, and effective visual ad campaign to post around the campus and in our local newspapers. Every night of the week will be a different event addressing the multitude of issues related to depression and suicide, particularly in college aged students. As of now we are in the brainstorming stage of these events, but here are some ideas: captivating and popular guest speaker, discussion panel inviting administration/professionals/survivors/sufferers, benefit concert, movie festival, stress/relaxation related event, coffee with the mother of someone we have lost to suicide, reserved room in a popular building on campus devoted to education and help for friends of people struggling with depression...and many more ideas! During the afternoons we will have an info table in the middle of the Tate Plaza on campus, one of the busiest spots, as well as afternoon concerts. Our goal is to have information, education, and awareness going on all day and every evening of that week, offering a variety of activities and events that will even attract the people most afraid of talking about depression and suicide Any money raised will go to benefit Nuçi's Space, a non-profit resource and support center for musicians in Athens Georgia. The aim of the organization is to prevent suicide by providing obstacle free treatment for musicians suffering from depression and other such disorders as well as to assist in the emotional, physical and professional well-being of musicians. This is a unique and special place in Athens that the community will do any and everything in its power to support. For more Info about Nuçi's Phillips and Nuçi's Space see www.nuci.org
