The Problem
The current water distribution system is inefficient; it allows for agricultural run-off to contaminate the water and the pressure of the water constantly breaks the pipes. The water has been especially harmful to children, and the students believe that purification system is an investment in the community's future success. As a result Binghamton University students took initiative to help change that by designing and building an entirely new water purification system for the community.
Plan of Action
Since October 2010, we have been working on the design of the water distribution system. We have teamed up with local id organizations and Peace Corp members in order to make sure that standards are being followed. On December of 2010 we visited the community of Rio Hondo to make sure our design meet the requirements and community needs. In may 2011 we are going back to the community of Rio Hondo San Marcos Ocotepeque to finalize labor for the system, which will be provided by the village's government and volunteers who live there.
