See It

The community we serve is the entire city of Winston-Salem, NC and the surrounding cities any child in grades K-12 are welcome to participate in our program free of charge. The problems we seek to solve are effectively integrating dis-advantaged youth into the community and society. We want to show today’s youth how they can make a difference and live effective lives. We have and wish to continue to address many problems facing today’s youth: the increasing rate of young minorities African-American and Hispanic (ages 12-24) that are newly diagnosed cases of HIV/AIDS over the past 5 years. Also, the increasing involvement of our youth in gangs and gang activities that includes graffiti, vandalism and other criminal behavior. The increasing school drop out rate in North Carolina. The lack of social inclusion and involvement skills of youth and their limited thinking. We want these children to understand what it truly means to be diverse not just in their thinking but their actions also by learning to interact positively with others from different backgrounds defeating racial and economic barriers. Our motto speaks for itself "Teaching Kids to Reach Beyond the Familiar Comfortably".

Believe It

We do free tutoring during the school year and free day sessions during the summer two days a week for all children. These sessions are on basic school subjects: Math, Science, English, Spanish, etc. We have sessions on many types of diversity cultural, gender, etc. We also have sessions on real life issues as Sex, HIV/AIDS, STI's, poverty and motivational aspects as dealing with depression and peer pressure. At the end of each year August for the summer program and the beginning of each new school year for the past 8 years we also do a H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People Excel)/ Back-to-school festival were we give for free all the things need for the children and community members (anyone can attend) to began a successful school year. We give away for free book bags, paper, pencils, etc. (school supplies) free food, free hair cuts, hair styles and more. At this event we also reach out to other agencies to provide much needed services the Health Dept. does free HIV/AIDS and std testing. The Police Dept., Alcohol Law Enforcement (drunk driving simulation), the Fire Dept. and more are there to connect with the community and provide positive interactions. We are able to do this event with the help of sponsors and in kind donations from companies and individuals in the community.

Build It

We have organized a group of college students and adults to help us reach minority & disadvantaged children in grades K-12. We do free tutoring during the school year and look to offer free day sessions during the summer for all children. These sessions are on basic school subjects: Math, Science, English, Spanish, etc. but our activities differ from other free tutoring programs because we add the aspect of diversity and current day issues. We have sessions on all types of diversity cultural, gender, etc. to help those who would not normally get a chance to interact with people from different backgrounds socially or economically. We also have sessions on real life issues as Sex, HIV/AIDS, STI's, poverty and motivational aspects as dealing with depression and peer pressure. We have seen the impact on the community as students who participate go to college and successfully go to their next grade level.

How Can Others Get Involved?

Others can volunteer to lead a session on one of our vast subject areas or donate needed items as snacks or basic "school" materials-paper,pencils notebooks, etc.
