This week’s lesson, delivered on Oct. 17, revolved around Eastern religions. We reviewed last week’s lesson on Abrahamic traditions and the students were quick to answer with the right solution. It seems like they’ve really solidified that knowledge, though they may have known it already from the culture they live in here in the U.S.

After reviewing last week’s lesson, we distributed an information sheet that had briefs about some major eastern religions – Shintoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism – and one of the GaGE directors, Parul Shanker, spoke about her household religion, Hinduism.

After Parul spoke, a UF graduate student and Sikh, Jasmine Glamour, presented some of the major ideas present in Sikhism, from how to pronounce the word for the tradition to the prophetic traditions the tradition is based on.
The students were engaged and intrigued enough to ask such subtle questions as,
“If all Sikh men and women have the same last name, how can you tell if someone’s married?”

Problem: Excessive use of the "R" word and vulgar references to challenged individuals in an offensive manor

Plan: Interview and tape the parents of challenged children and ask how the word affects them and how they feel about the use of that word, and what they would like to see happen through this new pledge; Interview challenged children and see how words have hurt them and what they would like to see happen through this new pledge; Interview people who have become part of the pledge and what they have seen happen in their community by banning the word; prepare powerpoint with all info

Action: Go to Elementary, Middle, and High schools and show them powerpoint and videos, then have a banner with sign and slogan and have them sign the pledge to be hanged in the entry of their school as a reminder to ban the word

September 9, 2011: The compost has been doing well. At one point, it got slimy and extremely foul smelling when I put in some frozen peas. They must have soaked the compost. But since then, it has cleared up, and it seems quite healthy for a compost.

From our first two fundraisers, our total is at about $300! We hope to continue to hold events and to get our total higher! :)

Look soon for a website! :D

This year our youth soccer program really took off. We used the same general format that we had in previous years, but we added a fifth and sixth grade division as well. In our small community, we saw a need and filled it. Our community wants to support both excercise, fitness, and healthy living, and a youth soccer program was what we came up with. Some elementary students in the community would travel 45 minutes away just to be involved in a soccer program in the spring. Seeing this made us realize the demand for such a program. With the addition of a new division, we were in need of new volunteers. This was a youth founded program, so we wanted to stick with that, so we approached the school and asked to be put in their daily announcements. The response was overwhelming. There were around 40 students who volunteered their time to help coach young soccer players. We are so fortunate to live in a community who will support this sort of endeavor. But, we don't want to exhaust our resources by using only our local businesses as means of financial support. We want to be able to keep this program building and growing for years down the line. We also want to make sure we are doing everything possible to support our youth to live healthy and active lives.

June 2011 Update

We received book donations from Darien Book Aid (also through International Book Project)! If only the books could talk and share their adventures of their 11-month journey crossing ocean and desert to get to us in Zambia.

The books were delivered to Bauleni Street Kids Project off Leopard's Hill Road in Lusaka. The school has more than 400 students including 96 special needs students. Mom had resurrected a chess club at the school a couple years prior and was happy to see her efforts continued. She even saw some of the students she had introduced to chess.

Bauleni had set aside a classroom to set up a library, but most of the books were too advanced for the younger kids so she was glad we could donate the 50+ books to Bauleni.

Mom set up a story telling time for students - there were like 30 children in one classroom listening to her read the first book. Then she had one of the students, a special needs girl volunteered, to read the second book. The student read with great articulation as the other students listened and looked on. After reading, the children were invited to pick a book to read - which they all did. It was amazing to see them pouring through the pages so focused on absorbing everything they were reading.

Mom bought milk, juice and cookies for the students so it was a sweet time.

We look forward to returning with more books!

UPDATES: So far, we have raised over $1,000 for the food bank as part of our FROGs at the Plate baseball event.
We learned hunger does not discriminate: we saw elderly, teenagers, even little babies who received food at the mobile food pantry. There were people of all different races too. We are looking forward to helping distribute food late this summer in August.

We are still soliciting businesses for sponsorship. Go to www.fortworthfrogs to learn more about our project.
