The Problem
Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Domesticviolencestatistics.org states that nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup. Some of these harsh relationships can result in deaths.
Plan of Action
In October of 1981 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was observed. DVAM is usually overlooked by people because it is the same month as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As indicated above, dating violence is a issue. Therefore, as a member of the Colonial Forge Family Career Leaders of American (FCCLA) student organization recommends the school celebrate DVAM in the month of January 2012. During this month FCCLA would like to conduct outreach and spread the word about domestic violence through:
• Putting up posters.
• Spread the word at sporting events.
• Get a guest speaker to tell us more about the issue.
• The last Friday in January we could celebrate a domestic violence awareness day.
• And more.
