The Problem
The problem we are trying to solve through the creation of the school garden is alleviating food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of access to healthy and affordable food. In many cases food insecurity happens in “food deserts” which are areas with little or no access to affordable fruits and vegetables. Many school districts in the Bronx are situated in food deserts where there is always plenty of access to cheap, unhealthy fast food in the area. Thus, many students and their families are suffering from malnourishment because they lack the resources to buy healthy food.
Plan of Action
The plan of action is to apply for grants and funding so that the school can construct the garden and begin growing vegetables in the spring. The vision of the school garden is to create a sustainable source of health and gardening education for the students by allowing them to learn through growing vegetables. The goals of the garden are to include the classroom lesson plans with the garden to promote garden-based learning; to instill in the students knowledge of where their food comes from; to teach the students how to grow their own food and thus create the food leaders of tomorrow; to create a school based CSA for the parents of the students in order to promote healthier eating habits for the families at home; to implement a garden to café program in which the food that is grown in the garden can be served in the salad bar of the school’s cafeteria; to start a school based farmers’ stand where the students can sell their fruits or vegetables to help raise money for the class as well as learn the basics of business.
