The Problem

This year, a friend and I co-founded the non-school sponsored club Dreams for Darfur. Upon hearing of the genocides taking place in Darfur through her church, we quickly did some research and were appalled by the tragedy. Because we are not school sponsored, we do not have the same privileges granted to other clubs. This means we are only allowed to meet on campus, and ideas such as "business campaigns" are shut down right away due to liability reasons. Luckily, we were able to host a benefit concert at one of our fellow officers house under the name "Autumnfest," so we were still allowed to raise money to send to Darfuri camps. After researching several places to send the money to, we officially decided on World Vision just last month. World Vision promises to donate 87% of the funds sent to them and they are working with the government to match every dollar 8 to 1. These are astonishing values and we are all so thankful to have found them. We just sent the money raised so far this year last Saturday, coming to about $3,300. After the matching program, displaced Darfuris will have received just under $30,000. We are all so enthusiastic and can't wait to continue our way to our goal of $10,000! The Dreams for Darfur website is http://dreamsfordarfur.googlepages.com. At this website you can find out information about the officers, our volunteer sponsor, our activities, what we have raised, and most importantly, about the crisis going on right now in Darfur.
