The Duke University Doctor of Physical Therapy Diversity Task Force is a student developed and governed organization. Our mission is to actively increase awareness and knowledge about the doctor of physical therapy profession, among cultural and social groups that are currently underrepresented within the profession of physical therapy. It is our belief that in order to best serve the ever-diversifying patient population, the population of practicing clinicians should also be equally as diverse.
The Duke DPT Diversity Task Force is actively engaged in sharing information about the physical therapy profession, through various community outreach projects. We have developed our own age appropriate, grade specific informative presentations to share with schools and after school programs in the greater Raleigh/Durham area.
Each presentation is 60 minutes in length and has 2 components. This first component will be a powerpoint presentation/discussion in which we teach the children about the physical therapy profession, i.e. what a doctor of physical therapy does, where they work, and what types of injuries/bodily system dysfunctions they treat. The second component includes an interactive segment where the children will practice being a physical therapist. The case studies will include physical therapy assistive devices such as wheelchairs, arm braces, ace bandage wraps, and more so that the children can simulate moving around with a physical impairment and discuss ideas to enhance function of those living with impairments/disability.
The DPT Diversity Task Force makes every effort to be included in the career fairs of local high schools and colleges, in order to build working relationships with local schools, and also to interact with prospective students to the physical therapy profession.
