The Problem

I am currently a graduate student at Baldwin Wallace University (BW), in Berea, Ohio. I am pursuing my Master's in Leadership in Higher Education, and have become inspired and motivated by both my peers and campus. My undergraduate studies were contained in the sport sciences realm, and I have always been very active at the recreation center. I enjoy the idea of working towards my own wellness, but also interacting with different groups around campus and trying new things I would not have the opportunity to, otherwise. I have been at BW for several months now, and have been set back by the amount of fitness and wellness classes our recreation center offers. With my current schedule, I can only attend one fitness and wellness class. I have been making due, but would love the opportunity to help the center expand to meet the needs of faculty, staff and students such as myself. Currently, the recreation center is maxed out on available space, instructors and money provided through their budget to assess this need.

Plan of Action

For a class assignment, I was asked to design a new initiative project for BW. I decided to focus my project around the creation of a new fitness and wellness class for the recreation center. Recently, the recreation center has been opening at 6:00am Monday-Friday, rather than 7:00am. The only space currently being used at this time is the weight room, which leaves the facility's other rooms (the dance studio, the racquet ball court, etc.) free and open for organized use. Since this project, I have met with the University's Wellness Council, the Associate Director of Recreational Sports and Services, the Aquatics/Fitness Coordinator of Recreational Sports and Services, the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, and have a meeting scheduled with the University President. Through these informational meetings, I have been able to gather data, advice and direction. I generated and distributed a survey to see what the campus was interested in seeing, and have a clear direction on where to take this project. The results of the survey indicate the most interest in a Tuesday morning class, running from 6:15-7:00am. Of the options provided for participants to choose from, yoga was the most popular choice of what class to offer. However, if the morning programming proves to be a success, I would like to see multiple types classes offered throughout the week. At this point, I am just lacking the funds to put this idea into action.
