Detroit, MI, 48235See map: Google MapsWhat's the problem you are trying to solve?: The Earth Tomorrow Club at Renaissance High School was dissapointed to discover the lack of genuine interest in the environment from high school students. Their only comfort was found in bonding with Earth Tomorrow Clubs of other Detroit Public Schools. However, in 2006 Renaissance High School was the only school able to continue the program due to a lack of interest and funding in other schools.
ECO Kids was developed to get elementary students involved in conservation and preserving the environment at a young age, with hopes that they will carry the interest with them as they grow. Why is it important to you?: Previously participants of ECO Kids have learned about the plant cycle, global warming, energy conservation, recycling, planted their own flowers, learned about animal behaviors, and much more. ECO Kids has proven to be a beneficial and productive way for both volunteers and participants to spend their time after school. What's your plan of action?: Founded by the Renaissance High School Earth Tomorrow Club, ECO Kids has been serving the community since 2006.
Corey Trammel, 2006-2007 club president, led the club on their first venture to the neighboring elementary school, F.L.I.C.S. Upon their first visit, Earth Tomorrow members found themselves surrounded and greatly out numbered by rambunctious latchkey students with little to no interest in the environment. However, rather than be discouraged Earth Tomorrow members returned the following week with a new and exciting lesson. Parents and teachers raved about the program and deemed it a beneficial way for students to spend part of their Friday afternoons, while students enjoyed interacting with the high school students and sharing what they learned with others. Gradually, these Friday afternoons became greatly anticipated by club members, F.L.I.C.S. students, & F.L.I.C.S staff.
The following school year Starlyn Robinson, 2007-2008 club president, continued in the F.L.I.C.S. tradition. Not surprisingly, the beginning of the second year went much smoother than the first, due to the familiarity built between the two groups. Although the program was in its second year, it was still without a name; when referring to it one would always just say “Flicks”. Starlyn recognized the immediate need for name and after several contest & brainstorming sessions, she devised the name “ECO Kids”. ECO Kids is an acronym that stands for the Environmentally Conscious Organization for Kids.
After the second year of ECO Kids, Starlyn & Corey came together with the idea of expanding the program world-wide, but realized they must first conquer the city, state, and national levels. Thusly, ECO Kids is currently in the process of becoming a 501c non-profit organization.
While Corey & Starlyn are out preparing the world for ECO Kids, the original ECO Kids, as well as the Renaissance Earth Tomorrow Club are left in the very capable hands of a close personal friend.
