The Problem
Because the focal-point of our community in Bryan / College Station, Texas is Texas A&M University, many residents perceive the community as a safe place with nothing but well-educated citizens. They forget the hidden pockets of town, whose members do not access the university system, but rather think of universities in general as out of their reach: another world. Children from neighborhoods like these are often times not able to participate in after-school activities that occupy their minds and bodies for the reason that many activities such as music lessons, sports, dance, etc., cost more than what their parents can spend. But kids with these backgrounds deserve the same opportunities as the kids from our communities' privileged families.
People wonder why the crime rate in our area has been steadily increasing in the past few years. If our kids receive positive encouragement--the message that they can achieve any dream if they work hard and take advantage of any positive opportunity that is available to them--they surely will not factor into these raising criminal statistics; rather, they will work reduce it by reinvesting whatever attention and care we give them.
Plan of Action
I named this charity after an inspiring poet and literature professor, originally from Montevideo, Uruguay, now at Texas A&M University, who devotes about 20 hours of his already busy week to practicing soccer in the park with kids from poor neighborhoods. More than just teaching them soccer skills, he tells them about the importance of discipline and respect. He instills confidence in them and already is encouraging them to go to college when the time comes. Our group is taking a tour of the campus next month in order to make them interested in one day becoming college students. Now, there is an assistant coach who is a also professor. He originally is from Cameroon, Africa. So our group is very diverse.
