This organization was sparked in Spring of 2009 when the first student was sponsored, a 13 year old orphan named Jeni. Her supplies were purchased out of pocket, with no real concept, at the time, that we might be able to help more than one child in the future. After having been pulled out of school for almost 3 years, Jeni was able to return full time and is continuing to make steady progress. Unfortunately Jeni is not a unique case, children throughout these rural communities are excluded from studying due to lack of funds and their obligation to work at an early age. We are working to create an in-country education committee composed of community leaders and teachers who are dedicated to promoting the importance of education. Here in California we have established a Board of Members, all university students, who are in the beginning stages of filing for incorporation as a nonprofit. We have also enlisted a number of experts in the area of international education and the NGO sector who will serve as our Board of Advisors.
Currently we are in the preliminary stages of constructing a small library and additional classroom (as there is only one right now). We have also made it a priority to graduate the first complete class of 6th graders in the community and support their continued education onto secondary school.
