The Problem
Our school has a roof garden, which throughout the years has been a source of pride for us. Classes were sometimes held there, and it was a nice place to go on a sunny day. However, in the past year a lot of construction has been done on our school building, making it difficult for us to maintain the roof garden. Now that the construction is ending, we would like to restore the roof garden to its previous condition, perhaps with the addition of some fruits or vegetables. We would also like to get more students at our school involved in the upkeep of the garden, in order to integrate it into our school's community.
Plan of Action
Our plan of action is to clean up the roof garden (pull weeds, clean up garbage, etc.), and grow more different types of plants in it. One of our goals is to grow fruits and vegetables that can be used in school lunches, in order to make these fruits and vegetables more available to our school community. We would also like to integrate the roof garden with the science curriculum at our school, so that more people can learn the importance of growing their own food. Ultimately, we would like to become a model for green practices within a city, as well as youth empowerment within a school.
