The Problem

There is a growing population of various ethnic groups and cultures in the Omaha community. The diversity among various cultures and backgrounds is evident yet Omaha remains racially and culturally segregated through the public school system, education, employment, and even demographics. I, along with my partner, saw the need for collectiveness and connectedness among businesses, schools, community organizations, and individuals living in the Omaha Metropolitan area. My partner and I came up with Eleven Inspirations which stands for eleven points that are essential to the upward development of the Omaha community. The ultimate mission is to diversify and unify the Omaha community through social, cultural, and educational means.

Plan of Action

My partner and I have first taken the steps to be legally known through the state of Nebraska. We have reached the masses through community events such as a diversity poetry event that took place November 22, 2008. We flew in a poet from Newark, New Jersey by the name of 'Gemineye' who has been on HBO's Def Poetry Jam. He was the featured guest at the event and he shared with the audience what diversity meant to him and how it directly parallels with all of his poetry. The spoken word culture is very diverse in itself and that is why we felt that poetry was the best fit for unification. The event was a huge success and we are now able to create future projects that promote unification and diversity. We have scheduled to host a worhshop/seminar for youth. The workshop is entitled "Positive communications and Positive relations". The workshop will give teens the tools and the resources to develop positive networking skills. We have also hosted a seminar and forum entitled, "Beauty Is Skin Deep" that targeted women of color. The seminar and forum discussed the issue of society's perception of attractiveness among women of color and how women of color internalize the perception of beauty and its standards which are standards that most women of color are not able to uphold because the standards are typically though a European stand point. These projects and events has assisted the community at large by advocating uniqueness, cultural, social, and individual diversity, and has also assisted in developing an appreciation for cultural connectedness and collectiveness.
