The Problem

In the country of Malawi, poverty is a part of everyday life. Due to this poverty, the people of Malawi are not receiving the education they need. Children are dropping out of school, adults are illiterate, and students are losing their chances to learn. Over 1/3 of Malawi's population is illiterate. Empowering Malawi's mission is to give the people of Malawi the power to change their lives through education.

Plan of Action

Empowering Malawi's first plan is to build a library in the village of Kamweko. This library will not only benefit students, but the adults of the community as well. After this library has been built we will begin adult literacy classes and reading classes for students. Eventually, we plan to expand all these projects to other villages in order to reach as many people as possible.

Project Updates

Throughout the month of March, 2011, Empowering Malawi is hosting a book drive to benefit the Kamweko Library Project. In places around the town of Loveland, Colorado, Empowering Malawi is placing book collection boxes where people can donate their un-wanted books. With this book drive, Empowering Malawi's goal is to gather 500 books for our project. We are currently looking for locations that would be willing to be book drop-off sites for this event. Empowering Malawi has created a new T-Shirt design! Support Empowering Malawi by purchasing this product. All funds raised from T-Shirt sales will benefit Empowering Malawi and help us build a library in the village of Kamweko.
