The Problem
There are many people in our community that do not speak English. Although there are many resources out there for people who do not know English in their native languages it is important to know the most common used language. These people often need translators everywhere they go from a grocery store to their child's school. If people took some basic English classes and were able to practice with young volunteers every week this will help them a lot. Education is always the key to success. In the computerized world we live now on it is essential for people to know how to use computers. For adults to be able to learn and practice what they learn with young adults would be beneficial to both. People who take the classes and then come practice with young volunteers will be more prepared to both use the English language and Computers.
Plan of Action
I belong to a new non-profit organization the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project (SSIP). We have recently acquired an office in which I will have the opportunity to coordinate twice a week the practice sessions. In these sessions about five to ten young volunteers will be readily on hand to provide assistance and practice with students that have been taking either the computer and English classes or both. The organization has an English professor from Benedictine University who will be giving English classes at no cost to community members. There will also be a Computer specialist who will teach people how to use computers. There is no equipment in our office yet, so we are hoping that through donations and grant money we can buy laptops, supplies, and furniture for the office so we can begin providing the classes immediately.
