The Problem

I am trying to equip at least two schools in the Pioneer School district to handle emergency communications. As of now, there is a station in the High School, with operators, but there is no equipment in any of the other schools (Two elementary and one middle school). Without this back up, there is no way of passing information or messages between the schools and the out side world.

Plan of Action

If I receive this grant, we would purchase Ft-60rs or a similar radio, to equip as many of the four schools as possible. The Ft-60r is a very good radio, producing 5 watts on both 440, and 2m. These radios would ensure that communication would continue uninterrupted between the schools during an emergency. Furthermore, they could be used to participate in Amateur Radio Emergency Service, ARES, nets(groups of people on one frequency talking about the same topic); used to pass crucial, life saving information from the local area to higher up the emergency response team. I have personally participated in these nets, and can attest having a back up to normal communication is extremely important, not only for the school district, but for everyone effected in the disaster area.
