ESOL Mentoring
the problem:
There are students who are not native English speakers who do not succeed in school because of the language barrier. I am trying to break this down for them in my high school.

7why it's important:
For the past two years, I have mentored middle school students in math. This year, though, I advanced to mentoring spanish-speaking students in math. While all three of my students were failing their math classes, it was not because they didn't understand the concepts; it was because the teacher was not taking the necessary time to break down the language barrier. Once I took the time to translate the math into words they could understand, they all immediately understood the concepts.
the plan of action:
Through the National English Honor Society, I opened up the writing lab to ESOL students in the mornings, where there are people who speak multiple languages ready and willing to help them with their schoolwork.
how you can get involved:
Others can help by taking the time to mentor other ESOL students at their own school, and realizing what an important issue it is.
