The Problem
I will be executing a project in the Dominican Republic called Esperanza. This project will serve as a special education literacy program for students with learning disabilities because there are no official special education programs and a shortage of resources for this specific population in Santo Domingo.
Plan of Action
My hope for this project is to prove to these students that someone does care about their education, and therefore they should care too. With Esperanza these students will increase their literacy ability because they will have the help and resources to do so. They will be more inspired to learn despite their frustrating circumstances because they will have their own space.
In order for me to achieve my goal there will need to be a lot of fundraising for this project. I will seek out a group of people who will compliment my skills and help me raise funds, find resources, and help me assess the needs of these students. I will have finished with the implementation of this special needs program by the end of the summer of 2012. This will be possible by establishing a team as part of my project plan. This team will be composed of interested students on the Amherst College campus, as well as those in the community of Santo Domingo who will help sustain this project. I will be visiting the Dominican Republic and keeping strong communication with these team members and students in order to make sure that I am addressing their needs as the project develops as well as abide by the budget and timeline I have developed with Reader to Reader, the non-profit global literacy organization I will be partnering with.
