The Problem

I cared for the sick and dying destitute at a Missionaries of Charity Compound in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The compound is home to over 1,000 impoverished Ethiopians suffering from deadly or debilitating diseases and injuries. Patients undergo wound care, cancer treatment, anti-retroviral drug administration, and receive other care as needed. Treatment is necessary, but the solution lies in prevention.

Plan of Action

With no previous medical experience I became the lead volunteer in the "Dressing Room" and worked 6-7 days a week treating and dressing the wounds of both in- and outpatients from all regions of Ethiopia. I am now enrolled in the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University where I will earn an MPH degree and gain skills necessary to fight the problems of social injustice both domestically and abroad.
