The Problem
Scholar Academies, a new non-profit school management organization, is interested in recruiting some student filmmakers for an exciting documentary project that would begin in July, 2010 and go until May, 2011.
Scholar Academies was started in 2010 by the team of leaders responsible for the founding of Young Scholars Charter School in North Philadelphia (http://phillyscholars.org). Through the School District of Philadelphia Renaissance Schools Initiative, Scholars Academies has been paired with Frederick Douglass Elementary School, a failing K-8 school in a nearby North Philly neighborhood. Through this pairing, we will be entirely restructuring the programs and curriculum of Frederick Douglass along the lines of Young Scholars current successful model and hope to turn it around into one of Philadelphia's top performing Charter Schools.
This effort promises to be challenging, exciting, and rewarding for all involved. We think that the filming of this process will be important as a means of educating and informing the public of our efforts and will certainly provide filmmakers with the opportunity to work in a dynamic and often unpredictable atmosphere.
The visual transformation of the school and inevitable confrontations and emotions coinciding with these changes will give the filmmakers plenty of interesting material to work with. Additionally, filmmakers would be able to attend important meetings and events that would give great insight into our initiative and the reform process of Charter Schools in America.
For all aspiring filmmakers, this project promises to be an exciting and useful opportunity. For those interested in being part of the movement of closing the achievement gap in Philadelphia, this opportunity is paramount.
Please consider applying to be a part of this important project! Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions at jobs@phillyscholars.org, subject line: FILM PROJECT.
Plan of Action
We want to recruit amateur filmmakers to help us document this exciting project. We would require the filmmaker(s) only to donate their time to attend occasional meetings and school events, and visit the school on a periodic basis, depending on their availability.
