The Problem

The phenomenon of children that live in poverty is globally growing, a fact that depresses me. In fact, there is virtually no city anywhere in the world today that is free of poor children roaming the streets. There are over 121 million children around the world who are uneducated. These children seek out a living on the pavements, face starvation, and brave exploitation by anti-social elements or are compelled to make a premature entry into the labor force. Other children walk into gangs and violence with no hope. These children have no way to attend school and therefore, illiterate and hopeless, they join gangs or child labor.

Plan of Action

Because poverty strikes so many children worldwide, these children cannot learn or succeed. Therefore, to protect them and to change their lifestyles, I enable education for them. Attending school will keep them off streets, away from gangs, and detached from labor. By doing this, I create a new lifestyle for these children, who now have hope and confidence in living a better life. One way to provide education to poor children is promising parents that the school will feed the children for free if they send their children to school. Because this will take the burden of cost to feed their children daily, parents are more likely to send their children to school rather than to factories. Moreover, my contact with underprivileged children has shown me the gap between youths like them and youths like me. Therefore, I believe in youth empowerment of not only the underprivileged children, but also youths like me to inspire them to make social changes and to involve themselves in projects where they can share their opportunities with children that do not have the same resources. In addition to taking on projects to enable education, such as feeding poor children to encourage them to school or building a school for them to learn, I found the LEAP Club to inspire and teach fortunate youths worldwide to show them how youths their age live. By speaking to them, I inspire them to overcome the social and cultural barrier that separates them from those in need and to, ultimately, come together to help the underprivileged children by helping EYE enable educational opportunities for the underprivileged children that live in ravaging conditions.
