The Problem

The community/towns I am trying to help will be small towns surrounding the Arusha, Tanzania, area. (Maji Ya Chai, Kisongo, Usa River). I met people there who were so poor they could not afford eyeglasses, and, as a result, could not see.

Plan of Action

I was touched by this situation, and when I got home I wanted to do something about it. I decided to start collecting used glasses. I knew that when people's prescription changes, or they want a new style of frames, their old glasses usually get tossed in a drawers. I made flyers, spread the word of what I was doing, and put baskets around at Churches and other places. So far I have collected over $300,000 worth of glasses. When I return to Tanzania in July, I will take all the glasses and deliver them to a newly-opened medical clinic--one of the few in the area, whose service is free. I will keep collecting them for many years, and either take them there personally or send them with others.
