The Problem
The Eyes on Africa Foundation is a nonprofit started by Jeff Lakusta in September 2007. Since its creation, the organization has spread globally – Turkey, Wales, Scotland, Canada, etc – through youth involved in a “Campus Coordinator” system linking grades of all ages to the organization. Having raised over $100,000 in its two years of existence, EOAF sends annual groups of volunteers to Sub-Saharan Africa to deliver monetary and volunteer aid to the organizations in greatest need.
Etafeni is a project based community center working outside Cape Town, South Africa which EOAF has supported in many different aspects (including providing a mobile HIV testing vehicle which helped raise the number of people being tested in the community by over 700%). Following its proven success, the Nwamitwa community has reached out to bring the Etafeni model to its village. EOAF is helping make this a reality!
Plan of Action
Training is complete for community builders and construction is underway. Work on the "Fit for Life, Fit for Work" (adult skills training) and Income Generation buildings is near completion, but continued support is needed for the gardening project, childcare services, HIV testing, and various other projects in the center.
Working with Etafeni and the Nwamitwa community, EOAF will continue to support Nwamitwa as it empowers people to find hope and opportunity!
