The Problem

Obesity and overweight is a nation-wide problem. The younger generation are, on one hand, strongly influenced by the media on tasty fast foods. On the other hand, they are poorly educated in nutrition. Various education programs were previously developed and tested to help spread nutrition knowledge but were not very successful due to high costs. There lacks an effective means to deliver the education.

Plan of Action

Under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian, I launched a seminar based on the information from the website, MyPyramid.gov, created by the United States Federal Department of Agriculture. Flyers promoting the seminar were distributed at a local sport event. The seminars were first conducted at the city library and by word of mouth, soon expanded to local elementary schools. So far, I have given seven seminars, reaching up to 300 students. Parents have often approached teachers, who related back to me, "My child is actually asking me for more vegetables!"
