The Problem
The current disparity in health outcomes between the world's rich and the world's poor is unjust and unacceptable. Combating these pressing global health challenges requires strong leadership and innovative ideas. While many young people today are deeply passionate about tackling these challenges, they often feel unable or unsure how to make a difference. When these young leaders don't achieve their potential impact, the creation of much needed public health solutions is delayed, to the detriment of millions of lives.
Plan of Action
FACE AIDS, with a network of thousands of student leaders at over 200 campuses across the U.S., is uniquely poised to offer small grants to encourage innovation in global health. We wish to promote the potential of our members by providing five college students with the financial backing to implement sustainable, 10-week long projects in the summer of 2011.
At FACE AIDS, we also recognize that responsible, effective, sustainable innovations can only be developed in partnership with the beneficiary communities through on the ground collaboration. Thus, students will be required to have a partner; either an individual, community, or organization from the location in which they wish to implement their project. FACE AIDS Summer Fellows will work with their partner even at the early design phase to ensure that the project is community appropriate and can be realistically implemented in the given time frame. By encouraging a spirit of collaboration, we believe that the student and local community will mutually benefit by creating an effective and sustainable project. After the fellows are selected, they will each be paired with a Global Health Corps Fellow who will guide them through the implementation stages of their projects. Global Health Corps Fellows will offer a unique perspective on working in international health field based on their current yearlong fellowship positions on the front lines of global health. FACE AIDS Summer Fellows will also have the opportunity to consult with global health leaders currently serving on the FACE AIDS Expert Panel.
