The Problem

The Fair Life Movement is an understanding that every 6 seconds a child dies of starvation in the world and that this creates a driven fury for actualizing change. In this re-volition we remember that we must always reach the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force, while never forgetting the fierce urgency of now!(-MLK)

Plan of Action

I have created One Heart Source, an organization currently designing a system of social welfare in Arusha Tanzania. Its purpose it two fold; on one hand it allows U.S. university volunteers to experience this worlds reality first hand in a volunteer program that is hands on yet non hand holding. In Arusha Tanzaniat he plan is a system of well being for women and children designed to provide an efficient, effective, and strategic attack against the vicious cycle of AIDS and Poverty. In the face of staggering statistics of vulnerable children and a virus whose impact continues to escalate, there is hope. One child at a time, one village at a time, one ward at a time together we will fight our way out of depths that many have turned their backs to. The One Heart Source site will serve as a center of social well being for all vulnerable and orphaned children in the Mateves Ward. The center will promote education, medical care, and empowerment. There are five important components to the system: • Education: HIV Prevention, Awareness, Life Skills, and Empowerment - A three class room school on site where all of the vulnerable children in the ward will receive free extracurricular education on sustainable living, life skills, and free tutoring for school subjects. - The OHS volunteer group will teach a full curriculum on HIV/Prevention and Awareness at all primary and secondary schools in the Mateves Ward. This will empower an entire generation to come. - • Home and Family - An onsite Vulnerable Children’s Home without proper caretakers, some of these children are HIV positive and will receive special nursing care. This is not an orphanage; it is a home with a family that instills love, values, education, and personal development. - • Medical Care: - One rule: absolutely no more death due to treatable illness in this ward. - Medical Care Center for women and children designed to diagnose and treat diseases that have devastated the area. Malaria, TB, diarrhea, and amoebas; we have all heard how cheap it is to cure these diseases, now it is time to cure them. All vulnerable children in the village will receive free treatment. - Free HIV Testing and Counseling - Pregnant women in the ward will be provided free check-ups and testing during pregnancy. This will also give HIV positive mother’s access to Nevirapine, a drug that lowers mother to child HIV transmission from 20% to less than 2% during birthing. • Street Kid Prevention and Rehab - This on-site center will provide education and vocational training for street children who show a desire to work towards a goal. It will also provide counseling for abused street children, in addition to drug rehabilitation. - The highly growing street child population is deeply rooted in the breaking apart of village families primarily due to the loss of one or both parents due to economic or medical circumstance. OHS looks to prevent the children’s transition into the city by providing sustainable solutions within the ward and the empowerment of neighbors to help in raising the abandoned child. • Information Center - A center for proper statistical gathering and analysis. Since so many statistics are either neglected or exaggerated, OHS will compile all Ward stats using a door to door method to ensure accurate statistics. This will provide data that will allow OHS to best direct its efforts in combating the epidemic. In addition consistent monitoring will also show areas of positive growth, which can be critical in proving this model as a large scale solution. - Identification of vulnerable children and enrollment in OHS will also minimize the rate of child trafficking, child labor, and the use of children for sexual exploitation since there will now be someone to overlook their wellbeing and provide a voice for their lives. So far we have begun to develop the site and we have completed the construction of the Children's Home for AIDS orphans and we have also begun the street kid rehabilitation program.
