The Problem
Obesity in America is an epic problem, especially at the college level. We all hear about the freshmen fifteen and cringe, but the college setting is breeding ground for bad eating habits, harmful activities such as drinking alcohol, and lack of physical exercise. School is stressful and students need to find alternative ways to get rid of stress while bettering themselves.
Plan of Action
Last semester, myself and other dedicated athletes made history by creating the University’s first official rowing club. Currently, we are a Student Government Association recognized club on the Metropolitan Campus made up of over fifteen student athletes, both male and female. Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus is a Division I school. This means that all athletic teams on campus are extremely competitive and highly time consuming. The newly formed Rowing Club offers an alternative way for students to exercise, rather than being a Division I athlete. Students can stay healthy, relieve stress, and get involved on campus while trying out a new sport. The club attracts rowers and non-rowers alike as there are both beginner and intermediate levels. The most attractive part of Crew Club is that since it is in fact a club, students can choose not to compete in races, but rather just attend the workouts in the fitness center daily. We welcome students of all athletic abilities and encourage students to join just to have some fun. Students who are more interested in the Club are welcome to try out for competitions and actually participate in rowing practices on the river.
