The Problem

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a form of Muscular Dystrophy. It is the number one genetic killer of children under the age of two. 1 in 40 people carry the gene that causes SMA, which is 7.5 million Americans. Unfortunately, not many people know about SMA. Through our project we hope not only to raise money to help find a cure for SMA, but also intend to educate our community about SMA.

Plan of Action

The Do Something Club at our school is hosting "A Walk in the Park." We will ask various clubs at our school to sponsor a station. Each station will be related to what one might find on a stroll through the park (for example hot dogs, popcorn, face painting, balloon animals, etc.). In addition, we will have a "Tree of Knowledge" with information about Spinal Muscular Atrophy to educate the community. We will be contacting a local newspaper, tv, and radio station to ask for their support and to spread the word about our event.
