The Problem
Mesa Arizona has a low literacy rate. There is an annual Family Literacy Night during the celebration of the "week of the young child". This year the week of the young child is April 23-27, 2012. The Family Literacy Night has been held previously in west Mesa, this year east Mesa will be hosting this event at East Mesa Early Childhood Education Center (EMECEC), part of the Mesa Public School district. The majority of students in this school have special needs and/or come from low socioeconomic households. The goal of this project is to increase the literacy of families in east Mesa. During this event the families will be given books to add to their household libraries. Last year most of the children that attended this event were from west Mesa, so that is why the event is going to be in east Mesa as well as west Mesa. There will be two events this year. This will include the families in east Mesa that are part of the low socioeconomic areas in the city.
Plan of Action
I would love to use this money to help the children in this area by purchasing books and supplies for this event. The books will be given to children and families that attend this event. During this event teachers and volunteers have story times and literacy activities.
