Family Promise

the problem:

Our mission is to prevent homelessness by helping those who want to take the next step in their life. We are helping a non-profit organization called Family Promise which helps homeless families get back on their feet and become self-sufficient.

why it's important:

Family Promise is important to us because we are helping families who are willing to overcome homelessness. The organization supports homeless families with children under the age of 18. First they help the adults look for jobs. Once the adults find a job, they are able to rent an apartment at Family Promise. An average day at Family Promise is like this: A van picks up the families around 4:30 AM from the sponsoring churches. They are dropped off at the Family Promise. Families get the children ready for school and those with jobs leave for work. By 5 PM, the families are back on the road, headed to eat dinner and to spend the night at the churches. They may be in the program between one and three months. Now, they will be able to stay in the transitional housing for an additional six to nine months. During that time, families are expected to become self-sufficient.

the plan of action:

As of right now the homeless shelter needs some improvements. The walls need to be repainted, carpet needs to be installed, and the yard and landscaping needs improvements. In general, Family Promise needs to be fixed to make it feel like home for the homeless families. In order to improve the living conditions at Family Promise, we plan on volunteering on the weekends. We are also collecting donations of everyday household items for the homeless families.
