The Problem
I am trying to solve the problem of youth that are getting injured or killed in rural areas due to ATVs, weather, tractors, and animals. We have youth from Pre-K thru 7th grade attend our Safety Day with high school kids from 2 area schools helping with presentations and being group leaders.
Plan of Action
Our FS4JK Chapter started 11 years ago, and at that time, I started as an attendee. As I advanced through the years and sessions it became obvious to me how important the subjects we were learning about was. When I turned 13 I got to start helping put on the Safety Days. When I turned 16 I became a Youth Ambassador for the National FS4JK and attended conferences where I learned how to put on presentations. This helped me to bring back more ideas to my chapter for sessions and I then put on an animal safety session. Each year since I have been involved in the planning we have tried to raise enough funds to send each family home with a safety device for their home. In 2007 we gave each participant a smoke detector. In 2008 each family received a fire extinguisher. This year we would like to raise enough to purchase weather radio's for each family, but in checking the price, know we may have to make this a 2 year project as we serve an average of 89 families each year. We are also looking at other possible grants from such sources as Wal-mart to help with funding this. Most of our other money raised is used to put on the day as we serve lunch and send home bags filled with safety things.
