"Feeding the 500" Thanksgiving Food Drive
the problem:
I made a goal to feed 500 families at Thanksgiving. There are so many people in need--more than I realized--just within my community. Families with children, the homeless, and even senior citizens are struggling because they can't afford to eat every day.

80why it's important:
When I received this challenge, I really had to put myself in the shoes of those families I would be helping. I can't imagine coming home from school and not finding anything to eat, even just as a snack. Also, as a child, my mom's family struggled with putting food on the table. She said that sometimes their fellow church members would bring bags of groceries to their front porch. Sometimes, I tend to forget just how lucky I am that my family can afford food every day. The families we will be feeding cannot afford to have Thanksgiving dinner this year, so it feels great that I get to help them.
the plan of action:
In order to raise all of the food and funds, we had a garage sale, a fundraising concert, a turkey drive, and five neighborhood food drives. We also had food barrels in at least nine different locations and collected canned food donations until November 16th. We collected a combination of over 7500 dollars and pounds of food, which is enough to feed 545 families, or 2163 people!
how you can get involved:
We are planning on making "Feeding the 500" a yearly tradition. Next year, we will let everyone know when and where to donate!
