The Problem

The mission statement of Field Day is "To encourage St. Louis children to strengthen their character and to achieve their full academic potential by way of scholastic and athletic challenges." Our goal is to motivate elementary school children in the St. Louis Public School System to stay enrolled in school and excel academically, despite the high student dropout rate and the disparate condition of the school system.

Plan of Action

Every March, the executive board of Field Day hosts a day of scholastic and athletic activities at Washington University in St. Louis. We invite over 200 children from surrounding elementary schools who have shown significant academic improvement and achievement throughout the school year. We want to expose them to a college community, while rewarding them for their academic achievement and motivating them to continue succeeding. To accomplish this, we recruit over 100 student volunteers to lead the activities and supervise the children. We work tirelessly all year to plan each Field Day. During the fall semester, we partner with the elementary schools in the district in order to visit classrooms and lead activities that complement the curriculum. By visiting the classrooms, we ensure that we have a continuous presence and impact in the children's lives so that they get excited about Field Day before the spring semester. We also spend our fall semesters holding various fundraisers and recruiting our student volunteers.
