why it's important:

Fijis Across America came from my desires to bike cross-country and to help in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
My grandfather lived with Alzheimer’s for almost 4 years. Watching his health decline and the toll it took on my family was tough. I decided that I wanted to do something to help in the search for a cure to Alzheimer’s.

Originally, this ride was “in honor” of my grandfather. I had 5 other guys commit to joining me on this ride. Together, we started this website, began the hunt for sponsors, researched the logistics of the trip and started spreading the word about FIJI’S ACROSS AMERICA. My grandfather, Barrett G. Cummings, passed away on July 10, 2009. This ride is now IN MEMORY of him.

the plan of action:

We are a team of dedicated students trying to make an impact on the world. Together we will be biking the Western Express bike route to Pueblo, Colorado, and then taking the TransAmerican bike route (~3,700 miles total) across the rest United States in order to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s research. In early to mid June, the Summer of 2010, we start from the West Coast and will reach the East Coast in late July or early August.

I am currently spreading the word by selling t-shirts and wristbands, promoting my cause at Alzheimer's Association events, and talking to local businesses about corporate sponsorships.

A website is already set up (www.fijisacrossamerica.com). We have been training the past few months, along with attending Alzheimer's Association events throughout the state of Kentucky to promote the cause. I am working on a corporate sponsorship packet to present to businesses. In the upcoming months we will plan out an itinerary for next summer, contact media to raise awareness for the ride, and will be talking to people/organizations/businesses all around the state.

how you can get involved:

Visit www.fijisacrossamerica.com! Buy a t-shirt or wristband to support the cause, and let me know if you have any connections to people who could help promote or donate to the cause!
