The Problem
Bureaucratic structures drawing lines in the sand on both a local and international level need to be eliminated if we are to have a dignified 21st Century pushing through globalization. How we use social media to achieve this is up to us.
Plan of Action
Each year, two cities across the globe will be selected for an open application to train approximately 20 artists in performance & installation art in each city. Participating artists must be from the region of one of the selected cities that year. Artists can be professional, amateur, or emerging and can work in ANY medium (writing, photography, sculpture, painting, poetry, theatre, etc., etc.). After receiving training during a 2-3 week workshop (which ends with a celebratory exhibit in that city), artists will be invited to join a private social media network called fireflytunnels.net . S/he will then begin building an online portfolio of performance & installation geared artwork with his/her newfound skills while simultaneously collaborating on the website with other artists from the two cities chosen that year. At the end of the year, the program's Director & Curator selects artists to take part in a touring, real-world exhibit to showcase the work made online (which is curated in an online gallery every month throughout the year). During this final year exhibit, artists can compete for a residency where s/he acts as part-time leader in producing educational opportunities to engage the local populations in touring while also working on his/her own work along the way. After two cities hold their first show together, they are opened up to join in collaboration with other cities registered on fireflytunnels.net Eventually, the website would like to be open to anyone who attends a Fireflytunnel training workshop, which we hope to make available world-wide. The overall goal being to use visual cues through the avenue of art and expression as a solution for replacing the jarble of language that seems to twist communative intent (see: propaganda).
