The Problem
The "community" being affected is not a neighborhood or school clique - Self-Harm is a growing problema round the world, not just for teenagers, but for pre-teens, children, and even adults. The First Hope works to provide a comforting, nonjudgmental atmosphere for individuals to being the first part of their recovery process. We encourage SH-ers to seek professional care, and do not claim to be (or take the place of) professional psychological help; we are simply compassionate, dedicated individuals working to help our fellow human beings (and in some case, fellow self-harmers) see the value in their life, how much people really do care for them, and offer encouragement, advice, and guidance from a friendly, understanding viewpoint.
Plan of Action
In the less than four months The First Hope has been active, we have gone from a simple Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com) to a full-fledged Social Network (http://www.thefirsthope.com) with more than 340 loyal Facebook fans and dozens of supports in the community, from school counselors and religious leaders to media sources and middle school children.
We plan to continue our work - chiefly, providing a means for fun socialization in a relaxing, safe, secure atmosphere on our website. We will continue to promote and draw more individuals into our organization (which we do not limit to just self-harmers. We encourage people to join who have never self-harmed, but share our desire to spread the message of Hope and Love). We wish to expand and set up presentations and community events to raise awareness about what it truly means for an individual to "self-harm" and the mental health/psychological/social issues that create it. We wish to dispel the general concensus that self-harm is for "attention-seeking girls" and raise awareness as to the very real, very dark facts behind self-harm.
