Based on Richard Louv's book, Last Child in the Woods-Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder and the National Wildlife Federation's -No child left inside, we are trying to encourage kids to get out and have fun! A Fishing Rodeo is planned because some of the youth in our area never go outside because of various reasons like the complexes are unsafe, afraid of bugs and snakes, don't want to get dirty, etc. We want to encourage the parents to go to a safe park to do something the kids have never tried like fishing. While there, they can also learn about other outdoor activities such as hiking, birding, nature walks, or just unscheduled play and exploration. We hope to foster a lifetime love for the outdoors starting with a simple activity like fishing. People will be available to assist the kids (and adults) with how to use a fishing pole, how to bait a hook, and how to remove the fish once it is caught. It is sure to be a great day to be outside fishing!
